Spontaneous Trip…

So yesterday I went to see Paprika, an animated film by Satoshi Kon. If you ever saw the series Paranoia Agent (it ran on Adult Swim a while back), then you’re familiar with this guy’s work. He likes to play with his audience’s brain. This movie is no different: intelligent, well-written, and visually stunning. It’s amazing that this quality of work was produced by 50 people on a $4 million budget. The whole concept of the film revolves around a device that can allow people to enter each other’s dreams and the implications of that kind of power. Very, very excellent stuff.

As far as I can tell, it’s only playing in theaters (and only in New York and Los Angeles) for the balance of this week. After that, we can only hope that there’s demand for a wider release (unfortunately that’s unlikely, the film’s R-rating will probably work against it there) or that it comes to DVD some time in the future.

But yeah, I’d say seeing this movie was worth the 10-hour round trip drive from Richmond to New York. The soundtrack is still stuck in my head.
