[WIP] Monkey Lizard - Part 1
May 29th, 2006 by Jason
Most of the 3D work I’ve been doing recently has been geared toward the cartoony, stylized side of things. It’s been a while since I’ve sat down and done any organic modeling that’s hinted toward realism. So I scoured my sketchbooks and ran across something I’d drawn a little over a month ago. You can see it on your left. I call it a Monkey Lizard. Yeah, yeah, yeah… I know it’s not a real animal, but at the very least it isn’t cartoony. I’ve decided I’m going to model, texture, and rig him for animation. It should prove to be a good challenge.
I’ve put a little bit of time into the model so far and I think I’m at a point where I have something good enough to show as a WIP. The next five images show the progression of this model from a rough face to his current state:
And since the model is now larger than this camera angle, here’s a full view of the current progress:
A lot of work still remains to be done. The rest of the body needs to be modeled and then made asymmetrical. Then he needs to be textured and given fur. And of course, he needs a rig that will allow him to move in a fairly believable manner. It’s all coming, just not immediately. In the meantime, critiques and comments would be more than welcome.

Hi Fweeb- nice start to your project. I feel that the cat-like eyes and their overall proportion are perfect. The facial features look interesting - your sketchwork shows more asymmetry than the .blend model. The development of this character is something I’ll be watching out for..thanks for posting

Thanks!
I plan on really pushing the asymmetry once I finalize the mesh and apply the mirror modifier. It all really depends on how quickly I get the rest of the body done. I’d wanted to tweak the face as soon as I got it to this point, but I was convinced by the other guys in the studio that I should finish the rest before getting to that stage.
They’re right, of course. But, man… I really wanna get in there and mess up his face.

Very cool!
Your sketch is as good as the rendering.
I can’t wait to see more.
Maybe even a Mrs. Monkey Lizard? lol
