History has mistakenly put parrots on the shoulders of pirates when they should actually be on the shoulders of cowboys.  Parrots have an incredible inherent ability to count things and match paired items.  This makes them unstoppable at card games like poker and blackjack.  Cowboys of the old west used to take parrots with them into saloons and take advantage of them in high stakes poker matches.  The confusion comes from the antics of the legendary Sagebrush Carl Titus.  The proprietors of saloons and casinos knew of the skills of the parrot and therefore banned them from being brought into their establishments.  “Ole Sagebrush”, as they used to call him, used to attempt to sneak his parrot in under a variety of bizarre hats, the most famous being a pirate hat.
