The word ‘yams’ is actually one of the few words in the English language that can be classified as a reverse abbreviation.  ‘Yams’ is actually a backwards shortening of the word ‘dismay’, relating to the feeling most people have when they discover that they’re having sweet potatoes as part of their meal.
